What’s this about?

Story of Sarkar is of Sundar Ramasamy ( Vijay) a NRI CEO comes to India to cast his vote only to find out that his vote is already cast by someone. He decides to file the case in court and decides to contest in election against chief minister of the state. Later decides to contest his party candidates in all constituencies after knowing the intentions of present chief minister. What happens from here on is the core of the plot.

What Works?

Performance of Vijay from Pre interval stands out and he is the backbone for this film with no doubt. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar carries her grey shaded character with ease. She didn’t had much to do in first half of the film but in second half her role changes the dimension of the proceedings. In second half, some sequences relevant to present day politics of Tamil Nadu is effective on the screen. Action sequences are slick and it is shot well by Cinematographer Girish Gangadharan. Background score by A.R Rahman is top notch which suits the mood. OMG Ponnu song choreography stands out.

What Doesn’t?

While the story is adequate for a political drama but Director Murugadoss’s slow narration makes it an average fare. Unnecessary sequences and songs further drags the narration in the first half. Keerthy Suresh who has impressed with Mahanati has got another role with no importance. She is limited to few scenes which has no impact to the story and limited to shaking legs in dance numbers. Radha Ravi as corrupt minister doesn’t have much to do except countering the lead actor as usual seen in all commercial films. Actor Pala. Karuppiah as chief minister Masilamani falls into trap of cliched character. None of the songs are worth listening and acts as speed breakers to the movie.

Sarkar is a political drama which falls into commercial entertainer arena. Performances of Vijay and Varalaxmi lifts the movie to certain extent. Director Murugadoss had an interesting premise, falls short of mark with the weak narration and unnecessary sequences.
